Purists might be upset by the slow speeds in the Viola Concerto, but they should hear this CD regardless: two of the greatest twentieth century concertos by Brits brought thrillingly to live by a pair of Russians. In his biography, My Viola and I (Elek, 1974) Tertis relented: 'I had not learnt to appreciate Walton's style. In 1928, the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham suggested to Walton that he write a concerto for the eminent violist Lionel Tertis. The composer agreed and started work on it almost immediately on completion he sent it to Tertis who, much to Walton's disappointment, rejected it. In itself the receipt of a commission from the leading violinist of the day was surely a sign that Walton had ‘arrived’ on the international scene. It was written to a commission from Jascha Heifetz, no less. The Violin Concerto was finished four years after the symphony, in 1939. From the sunlit Mediterranean lyricism of the Violin Concerto to the rousing Spitfire Prelude and Fugue, this is the composer at the height of his power. Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra follow up their definitive account of the symphonies (on CDA67794) with another outstanding album of Walton.
